Welfare Food Challenge

The Welfare Food Challenge is an event in its 4th year. I am going to give it a try and blog about it here (even though I am no longer in Sweden - I don't have another blog handy and don't want to feature it on my YYJWorks blog). Unfortunately Blogger is really bad at allowing you to jump within a page so I will create separate posts for each day and link to them from this overall page.

The premise of the Welfare Food Challenge is to challenge members of the public (and celebrities including singer Bif Naked and MP Jenny Kwan this year) to eat for one week (November 3-9 inclusive) only what can be purchased for $21.

Preparation for the Challenge

$21 doesn't go very far. I am going to keep eating very plain to keep costs down - half an apple and a small banana with 1/4 cup of cottage cheese for breakfast, an egg salad sandwich and fruit and veg for lunches and curried lentils and potatoes for dinner. I will cheat a bit by using , mayonnaise, salt, pepper, oil and spices that I have on hand but have included a toonie within the picture of food below to represent them (the food pictured costs $19.80 so I am actually over budget by 80 cents but I don't really think the oil, mayo, spices, salt and pepper will add up to $2). I have also priced items like eggs and milk by quantity used rather than by how they are purchased (so for example I will consume 8 eggs but the price reflects the cost of a dozen eggs multiplied by 2/3). Below you see a photo of my week's worth of food.

November 3, 2015 - Day 1 - where I learn that feeling a bit under the weather can be a blessing in disguise

November 4, 2015 - Day 2 - so far, so good

November 5, 2015 - Day 3 - it gets harder not easier, breakfast out with the running group

November 6, 2015 - Day 4 - tougher than the day before

November 7, 2015 - Day 5 - toughest day yet, but at least it is not long to go now

November 8, 2015 - Day 6 - a surprisingly good day - was hungry throughout the day but not as unbearable as November 7

November 9, 2015 - Day 7 - another good day - obviously change to oatmeal was instrumental (is it placebo effect?), I think other people will be ending their challenge around mid-afternoon but I will finish out the day on the challenge and will not resume eating 'normally' until Tuesday, November 10
