Walking to School

The Daily Walk to School

The sign is for a yet-to-be-built apartment building that will be constructed on the site of this parking lot in 2013/2014

The parking lot above had a decrepit old building (glorified shed) where we took our recycling and garbage - as part of the deal for getting the parking lot the developers had to provide us with new garbage rooms which is what this white building is - let's hope it stays nice

Looking toward the other 'half' of the Vaktargatan complex where construction is underway (that's what the blue buildings are - here in Sweden they use railway containers to provide temporary space during construction)
A closer look at the railway containers used as accommodation for construction staff

The underpass that takes me underneath Rabyvagen (a major road)

The other side of the underpass - construction is going on here too but in this complex it seems to be refurbishment of existing apartments not construction of new ones

It's a horrible mess over here and I expect that 'our side' of the road will be in a similar state in the year/months to come when construction gets going on the new buildings
The white building is what is going to be built in the parking lot on our side of the main road

One of the nicer old buildings (that I wish I lived in!) on the way to school

I even covet some of the obviously newer buildings - Vaktargatan is at that awkward age - too new to be appealing for its eccentricity (which is just ugly and bad design) and too old to be smart and well thought out

I pass two gyms on the way to school - SATS is the first (I hear it is very expensive)

Friskis and Svettis is the second - both are franchises with several outlets in town

the doorway on the corner of the building in the middle of the photo leads to an indoor shopping centre with an ICA (grocery store), Systembolaget (liquor store), movie rental place, optician etc

A favourite second hand store where I got my winter coat for 125 kr (about $19)

The spires of Uppsala's famous cathedral

Lovely old building - it was a dairy and now it is offices

The Uppsala concert and congress hall - not sure how I feel about its architecture

Sivia Torg - only notable because it is the place where the first Asian food store I learned about is located (although it is certainly not the best)

Vaksalagatan goes underneath the railroad tracks and on to the main square - on the other side of the main square (Stora Torget) it changes into Drottninggatan

City Hall - another architecturally unimpressive building in my opinion
Looking down Kunsgatan (king's road) toward the central station - that's city hall on the left

Uppsala seems as obsessed with tearing up streets as Victoria - just to the left of the car in the photo is a small street where my gym is located

Stora Torget (the main square) - the bus is heading back down Vaksalagatan toward my part of town

In the NNW corner of Stora Torget is Ahlens department store

In the NNE corner is this business school with Nordea bank on the ground floor

In the Northern corner is Radhuset - a fancy shopping center with a very nice toilet (free!)

Detail of a doorway at #2 Drottninggatan - I realize now that this is where I slipped and fell a few weeks after these photos were taken

A closer view of the cathedral - nearly at school

The river - looking SSE

The river looking NNW
The doorway to our building is in that arcade beneath the signs (Optik, Cameo etc)

Drottninggatan 4 - my destination most weekdays
Thanks for coming on this walk with me.
